My friends at work keep asking about my trips to the islands of Hawaii so this website is for them. When they ask, I try to tell them what places to check out on the web when they're planning their trip. So, here they are along with a few other cool things you ought to be familiar with. If you have a question, I'll be in the lunch room unless there's another foul up with the chicken salad.
Aloha!I usually do my homework for my Hawaii vacations online and the links on the right are the sites from my Favorites. They're where I start and when I get lost I just click back to my favorites. You can find most everything online. I try to save notes to a notepad text file and then print out the little hints and tips to take with. I use the Hawaii travel handbook from Moon Publishers. You can find it at the Hawaii Vacation Guide link, where they have most things you'd like. There are 8 Hawaii islands. Two aren't for tourists, and another two don't have much to offer. That leaves four islands to visit. Maui, Kauai, Big Island, and Oahu are all very different places. Kauai has jungles, wild oceans, and the awesome northern NaPali coast and the Waimea Canyon. It doesn't have a lot of people and sometimes doesn't seem like a tourist place. Maui has two regions. The southern coastline is all beach and all hotels, and the north side from Hana to Kahului is rugged shoreline and beautiful wilderness. |

There are hundreds of good places to stay in Hawaii, and for a while they've been offering some good discounts so shopping is easy. Just figure out what you want to do and where you want to do it and then you'll have an easy time getting a good hotel. Or, just drop in to a resort and play golf all day like I did last time.

Before you go: Learn the shaka and some Hawaiian words. And if you do, read some books about how Hawaii came to be what it is today. It's a strange and sad story. |
Oahu is where you'll find the capital of Honolulu and about a million people. It's a huge city with a historic downtown and where you'll find Waikiki Beach. It's worth driving to the Windward side and around the island north to the North Shore. The Big Island could swallow all the other islands whole. There's the Kona-side around Kailua, and there's the Windward side around Hamakua, around Hilo, and down to the Volcanoes National Park. The first time you visit Hawaii plan on seeing two islands. Probably check out Honolulu and then either Big Island (for the volcanoes) or Maui (for the beaches, or the whales and sun). Old time Hawaii is gone, but if you slow down you'll have some fun. But be sure you stay out of the sun from 10am-3pm. That's a good time to visit historical sites, eat lunch and do some shopping.
